Lukas 8:37

8:37 Then ¹  all the people of the Gerasenes ²  and the surrounding region ³  asked Jesus ⁴  to leave them alone, ⁵  for they were seized with great fear. ⁶  So ⁷  he got into the boat and left. ⁸

22:32 but I have prayed for you, Simon, ⁹  that your faith may not fail. ¹⁰  When ¹¹  you have turned back, ¹²  strengthen ¹³  your brothers.”

24:23 and when they did not find his body, they came back and said they had seen a vision of angels, ¹⁴  who said he was alive.

[8:37]  ⁵ tn Or “to depart from them.”

[8:37]  ⁶ sn Again there is great fear at God’s activity, but there is a different reaction. Some people want nothing to do with God’s presence. Mark 5:16 hints that economic reasons motivated their request.

[8:37]  ⁷ tn Here δέ (de) has been translated as “so” to indicate that Jesus’ departure was the result of the Gerasenes’ response. A new sentence was started in the translation at this point for stylistic reasons.

[8:37]  ⁸ tn Grk “returned,” but the effect is that he departed from the Gerasene region.

[22:32]  ⁹ sn Here and in the remainder of the verse the second person pronouns are singular, so only Peter is in view. The name “Simon” has been supplied as a form of direct address to make this clear in English.

[22:32]  ¹⁰ sn That your faith may not fail. Note that Peter’s denials are pictured here as lapses, not as a total absence of faith.

[22:32]  ¹¹ tn Grk “And when.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

[22:32]  ¹² tn Or “turned around.”

[22:32]  ¹³ sn Strengthen your brothers refers to Peter helping to strengthen their faith. Jesus quite graciously restores Peter “in advance,” even with the knowledge of his approaching denials.

[24:23]  ¹⁴ sn The men in dazzling attire mentioned in v. 4 are identified as angels here.
